Heartbreak has been very good -- or at least very lucrative -- for James Blunt, the former British Army captain turned chart-topping new pop star.

"I look forward to being dumped by a girlfriend as often as possible!" quipped Blunt.

At 28, he is already a household name in England and other parts of Europe, thanks to "You're Beautiful." The song, from Blunt's debut album, "Back to Bedlam," was inspired by a chance encounter he had on a London subway with a former flame and her new boyfriend -- a boyfriend he did not know existed.

Although Blunt's eyes met hers for only a fleeting instant, it was enough to send the struggling singer-songwriter rushing home with a creative burst. Within a matter of minutes, he recalled, "You're Beautiful" was not only born, but completed.

The third single to be released from his album, the heart-on-sleeve ballad topped the pop charts for nine weeks running last year in his homeland. It became the first single in England in a decade to debut outside the Top 10 and then reach the No. 1 spot.

Perhaps because of the universal nature of its lyrics -- And I don't think that I'll see her again / But we shared a moment that will last till the end -- the softly elegant "You're Beautiful" has become one of the most frequently played songs at both weddings and funerals in England. Its success also propelled "Back to Bedlam" to the top of the album charts, where it displaced Coldplay's "X&Y" and reigned at No. 1 for three consecutive months.

"For me, it doesn't feel like it happened very quickly," Blunt said. "I started doing music at 14, I got out of the army (more than) three years ago and my album has been out over a year. So we've been building this for a long period of time."

Blunt's military service saw him leading a reconnaissance squadron of 15 soldiers and five vehicles in war-torn Kosovo in 1999. His songs, the majority of which are easy-on-the-ear tales of love, loss and friendship, suggest such influences as early Cat Stevens, Al Stewart and James Taylor, by way of Damien Rice and Nick Drake.

But "No Bravery," the standout track on his otherwise pleasant if innocuous album, is a happy (or, rather, unhappy) exception. It paints a vivid picture of the bloody realities he encountered while on duty in the Balkans, with such grim lines as: Tracers lighting up the sky / It's another families' turn to die ... Old men kneel to accept their fate / Wives and daughters cut and raped / A generation drenched in hate.

"I wrote it in 10 minutes one day and it was very easy," said Blunt, who joined the army to pay off his college tuition and says he penned "No Bravery" while crouching next to a tank.

"It seems strange talking about anything to do with that song being 'easy,'" he added, "because everything else in Kosovo was very hard. And performing it is hard, because of the images it portrays. Those images were all there, right in front of us."

Armed with just his songs, Blunt attended the 2003 edition of South By Southwest, the annual indie music confab in Austin, where he performed for an audience of barely 30 people. One of them was former San Diegan Linda Perry, who was about to launch her own record label after writing and producing hits for Pink, Christina Aguilera and others.

Perry offered Blunt an album deal on the spot. While he admits he didn't know who she was at first, he happily accepted. "Back to Bedlam" was recorded in Los Angeles, where he stayed with actress Carrie Fisher, a friend of a friend. He recorded one song, the wistful "Goodbye My Lover," in the (apparently very large) bathroom of Fisher's Coldwater Canyon home.

"I ran out of money and I needed a decent piano, and it sounded good in Carrie's bathroom," Blunt said. "And it (the bathroom) got me back to the emotional head space of that song."

British singer/songwriter James Blunt has shunned her cute and cuddly side and has invested in a gun.

Blunt has bought the weapon that fires only rocks to protect himself from stalkers and obsessive fans at his new millionaires pad in Ibiza.

The 150 year old £1.7million villa reportedly features six bedrooms, a library, sun terrace, stone floors and a swimming pool.

He moved into the villa earlier this year and it has already become popular with souvenir hunters rifling through his bins.

According to the Mirror he said: “I’ve not had my place in Ibiza long but since I’ve been here I’ve experienced a lot of people hanging around outside my house, it’s totally out of order.

“When I came here I just wanted to get away from it all and I just kept to myself so I’d like some privacy in return. I’ve gone out and bought a gun that shoots rocks so if I catch anyone hanging around then I’ll get them with that.

“Some people just go too far, it’s an invasion of privacy.”

After believing that he had found a secluded farmhouse on the island of Ibiza in which to escape to for a bit of peace and quiet, the singer has been dismayed to find that eager fans have managed to track him down and loiter at his gates.

The solution? A gun that fires rocks to scare them away.

"I've not had my place in Ibiza long but since I've been here I've experienced a lot of people hanging around outside my house, it's totally out of order," Blunt lamented.

"When I come here I want to get away from it all and I just keep to myself so I'd like some privacy in return. I've gone out and bought a gun that shoots rocks so if I catch anyone hanging around then I'll get them with that.

"Some people just go too far, it's an invasion of privacy."

Blunt's not-so-secret hideaway cost the princely sum of £1.7 million and has six bedrooms, a library, sun terrace and swimming pool.

The 'You're Beautiful' singer broke up with long-term girlfriend Camilla Boler earlier this year, after reports emerged that he had been involved with a series of famous women. However, Sutta is adamant that she had nothing to do with him. She told the Daily Mirror: "There's no way I'd date him."

BBC concert footage of U.K. singer/songwriter James Blunt will be featured on the artist's upcoming DVD, "Chasing Time: The Bedlam Sessions." The project arrives Aug. 8 via Custard/Atlantic.

Filmed in London at the BBC studios on Nov. 5, 2005, the live set features Blunt and his band members accompanied by backing vocalists and a string section. In addition to performing hits such as "You're Beautiful" and "High" from his breakthrough album, "Back to Bedlam," Blunt rounds out the show with a cover of the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind."

The DVD will also include a selection of music videos, behind-the-scenes footage and two documentaries.

Blunt is currently on tour in Europe but has blocked off most of the fall for a fresh round of North American dates, which are scheduled to run from Sept. 30 to Nov. 29. Cities and venues have yet to be announced.

“He was a good lover. I would never have gone back for more if he wasn’t.”

James left London for three months to do more training abroad.

And the text flirting soon stopped when Natalie’s husband found sexy messages on her phone.

He copied the mobile number and got his mum to call James and warn him to stay away from his wife — which James respected.

It seems that James Blunt’s International hit, You’re Beatiful, isn’t all bad. The song has been credited for pulling a girl out of a ten-day coma.

Claudia Amber Dealwis opened her eyes for the first time since an accident as the Blunt track - her favourite song - was played on the radio at Burnley General Hospital in England.

The little girl fractured her skull after falling 15 feet over a balcony.

"I'm so relieved she is out of the coma,” her dad divulged. "Claudia loves that song and is always singing it."

“It's like her very own little theme tune."

Just in case you wanted some more James Blunt news, the squeaky singer has admitted that American women scare him. The pint-sized popstar yesterday confessed that: "American women are an inch taller (than British women).

“An inch makes a huge difference to me, because I'm a pretty small guy."

A GIRL of five woke from a 10-day coma after hearing her favourite James Blunt song You're Beautiful on the hospital radio.

Claudia Dealwis's parents Paul and Gaynor, both 40, cried tears of joy and hugged her as her eyes finally opened.

Paul said: "We were just so relieved she is out of the coma. We couldn't believe it.

"Claudia loves that song and is always singing it. It's like her very own little theme tune.

"When it came on the hospital radio we could just see her starting to move a bit and we knew she was beginning to wake up.

"When she opened her eyes and acknowledged us we were so relieved. Every little movement was like a massive step.""

Doctors had feared Claudia might not pull through after she fell head first over a 15ft balcony at a friend's house and fractured her skull. She landed head first on the hallway floor and lost consciousness three weeks ago.

Claudia, who is recovering at Burnley Hospital, is still paralysed in her right arm and leg, but she is starting to move more and more.

Contract cleaning boss Paul said: "Claudia's brain is still so young which means it still has the capacity to learn so she should be able to walk again. She walked 10 yards yesterday.

"The doctors told us straightaway that it was a case of life and death. They were fighting to save her life.

"She is progressing slowly and hopefully she can do it. The last three weeks seemed like a lifetime but we believe that she will pull through this."

For ten days she lay in a coma in hospital, her distraught parents praying at her bedside for a miracle.

But it was only when the five-year-old's favourite song - You're Beautiful by James Blunt - came on the hospital radio that she finally began to awaken.

Yesterday, as she continued to make a remarkable recovery, her mother and father said they were convinced that the melody of the singer's Number One hit had helped her pull through.

"Claudia loves You're Beautiful and she used to sing it all the time," said her father Paul, 40. "It was like her theme tune.

"Following the accident, the doctors warned us she might not make it, and after ten days in a coma we were desperately worried that she wasn't going to recover.

"But then the song came on the radio and she started to move for the first time, and we could tell she was starting to wake up.

"It was an unforgettable moment when she opened her eyes and acknowledged us at last.

"Since then it's been tough but she hasn't looked back, she's a real fighter, and I'm sure that hearing the song she loves so much helped her come round."

Claudia, an only child, fell from a first-floor balcony onto a hallway floor while playing at a friend's house last month, suffering a fractured skull.

Her father Paul, a property developer, and mother Gaynor Turner, 40, a bank clerk, live in a bungalow in Burnley, Lancashire, and they fear she was unused to the dangers of heights.

After being stabilised at the accident and emergency unit of her local hospital, she was transferred to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury where her parents spent ten days at her bedside around the clock praying for her to recover.

"The doctors told us straight away that it was a case of life and death," said Mr De'Alwis. "We broke down when we saw the state of her.

"She was strapped down with tape everywhere so that she couldn't move for her own safety, but she was unconscious anyway.

"The doctors said she might not make it and if she did she might not speak, or may be brain-damaged or paralysed."

But after her remarkable recovery her parents now hope the youngster, who goes to Wellfield Church School, Burnley, will be able to go home in time for her sixth birthday next month.

"She is still paralysed in the right arm and leg, but she is starting to move more and more," said Mr De'Alwis. "She can already walk a few yards and we've been told she should be able to go home in about two weeks' time.

"Claudia is a fantastic, really strong little girl. She has a better social life than I do - she does martial arts, swimming and ballet. That's what we think saved her life, as she is such a fit little girl."

Harrow-educated Blunt, a former cavalry officer, has sold six million copies of the album from which You're Beautiful is taken, Back to Bedlam.

But the 32-year-old has faced accusations that his music is bland while being publicly linked with a series of lovers including socialite Tara Palmer Tomkinson and model Petra Nemcova.

Consultant neurosurgeon Donald Campbell said that while there was no specific evidence that patients are helped by sounds, families often find them a help.

She is the beautiful blonde who inspired James Blunt to write his award-winning album Back To Bedlam, and to whom the singer dedicated his number one hit You're Beautiful in front of thousands of adoring fans.

Holed up in a grungy flat in Fulham, West London, when the ex-Army officer was desperately trying to get a record deal, it was Camilla Boler who guided the then unknown Blunt through the early stages of his career and encouraged him to pen his hugely successful album.

But since dedicating his ubiquitous hit to Camilla, a pretty heiress and aspiring singer, their love life has been anything but beautiful.

Their two-year romance, has been tested by long periods apart, the overwhelming pressures of James's overnight fame and persistent whispers that the singer has been unfaithful.

For months, there has been speculation that their relationship was over after reports in March that he had had an affair with socialite turned TV presenter Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

A few weeks before that, the former Household Cavalryman had been spotted at a Manhattan nightclub hand-in-hand with Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova. But Blunt, 32, denied rumours of an affair and insisted they were just friends.

Then, two weeks ago, Camilla's worst fears were confirmed with the heartbreaking evidence that he was cheating on her.

Seemingly oblivious to a prying lens, a pale and pasty looking Blunt was snapped frolicking in the Spanish surf with beautiful 26-year-old Petra during a break in his nine-month world tour.

Leaning over to caress his belly, the supermodel, who lost her photographer fiance in the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, appeared mesmerised by Blunt. And despite being on a public beach in Ibiza, the couple made no attempt to hide their intimacy.

Now, in a searingly honest and emotional interview, Camilla reveals how she learned about the pictures when a friend called to tell her that there was unquestionable evidence that Blunt was cheating on her.

'I realised something was wrong because she told me to sit down,' says Camilla, now 24. She told me a newspaper had printed pictures of James on a beach with Petra. I felt as if I was being chewed up and couldn't bring myself to look at the newspapers.'

Camilla, revealed to The Mail on Sunday how she and the Harrow-educated singer split up in April this year, but decided to give their relationship another chance just days before the devastating pictures appeared.

He called [in late May] and asked me to go to the Ivor Novello music awards in London with him,' she says.

'I wanted to go. If I'm honest, I hadn't given up on the idea that we'd end up back together.

'It turned out to be one of the most surreal days of our whole relationship. My car pulled up outside the venue and the first thing I saw was James in front of banks of cameras - the photographers were going crazy. I was standing there staring with my mouth open. It would have made an incredible photograph, but one of James's assistants jumped in and hustled me back into the car and round to the back entrance.

'Even so, it was great to see James. I started off shaking like a leaf, but he was my old James. We actually had a real laugh. When he won one of his two awards, he gave me a kiss on the cheek and we spent the rest of the day together. I tried to keep it light but found it impossible not to talk about us.

'A week later he stayed with me for two days. He wanted to be with me and I wanted to be with him - it was simple. We were being silly, having fun. He told me that he felt really lonely because he spends so much time travelling. If he'd been with Petra by then, he had every opportunity to tell me. But maybe he didn't have the courage or the decency.'

In a bitter twist, Camilla reveals how, after their two nights together, they met up again a few days later in Spain and she drove Blunt to Madrid station so he could catch a train to the airport.

'It's ironic, but I dropped him off so he could catch a flight to Ibiza. Two days later those pictures appeared. We haven't spoken since.'

Intimidated

Camilla, the daughter of the late kitchen tycoon Stephen Boler, recalls how she felt intimidated by statuesque Petra when they met while Camilla was travelling with Blunt in America a year ago.

Despite rumours that he had grown close to Petra, Camilla believed they were just good friends and didn't want to appear to be a suspicious girlfriend.

'Being honest, it did make me insecure, but I didn't want to let that show,' she admits. 'He was under so much pressure. I didn't want to be the nagging girlfriend.

'You have a choice when you are with someone famous - you can follow them around and get to spend a few minutes a day with them or you can get on with your own life. I chose the latter. I'm an independent girl. I have my own music career.

'Maybe I was wrong to give him so much space, but I couldn't bear to be yet another person making demands on him. I loved him too much for that. When I went to America last year to stay with James when he was on Saturday Night Live, Petra was in the backstage area and something about her made me worry. Basically, she's so incredibly hot. They obviously knew each other but James didn't introduce me. And she didn't go near him while I was there.

'Still, I had to ask him who she was. He told me how she'd lost her boyfriend in the tsunami and how she'd suffered terrible injuries. I felt really bad that I'd been suspicious of her and immediately told James I was happy he was her friend.'

Blunt had also insisted that Tara Palmer-Tomkinson was just a friend when it was claimed that the pair were having an affair. He reportedly spent a night with her after she saw him perform at New York's Webster Hall in March.

'Of course, there had been rumours about other women,' says Camilla. 'But I never believed them. The day before the story about him and Tara hit the papers, James called to warn me. He told me it was untrue and we ended up laughing about it.

'I have nothing against Tara. I was more upset that I was misquoted as saying she was a publicity seeker. And it seemed like every month there was another story about James and another woman - the actress Mischa Barton and Jessica Sutta from the Pussycat Dolls.'

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson refused to deny the romance at the time, saying: 'If nothing happened between James and me, then I would come right out and say nothing had happened. And I haven't done that, have I? It's pretty easy to work out what I'm saying.'

Strained

Camilla still insists she believes Blunt did not cheat on her with Miss Palmer-Tomkinson. But she does admit that their relationship became increas- ingly strained as a result of his gruelling work schedule.

'The truth is that James ended our relationship in April,' she says. 'I was at someone's house in Glastonbury and he was in America when he called me. I actually had a flight booked to America to see him the week after, but as soon as I heard his voice I knew it was over. 'Things hadn't been good for a while because we'd spent so much time apart. It's such a cliche, but his incredible success had put an enormous pressure on our relationship. There was no time for us as a couple. It was all just about fitting in a few hours in his crazy schedule.

'Still, I didn't want it to end. I said everything I could think of to make him change his mind. We were both crying but he said he just couldn't keep the relationship going.'

Although they had been together for two years, Camilla and James first met six years ago while she was working as a barmaid in a pub in Fulham.

'When I was 18 I moved to London to be with my sister and got a job in a pub. He was just this musician who knew some of my friends. I knew he liked me a long time before anything happened.

'It was only two years ago that we got together. He invited me to a party the day before I was due to fly to Australia for a month. We stayed up all night talking and he was waiting for me when I got back.

'At the time he had a pokey flat in Fulham and he was trying to get a deal. It was all quite grungy. I went on the road with him, sleeping together on a tiny bunk in the tour bus. I loved it because it was a world I wanted to belong to - doing tiny gigs, eating chips at midnight in service stations. James wasn't famous but we were completely happy and in love.'

But, she says, 'things started to change once the buzz about his music began. I'd go with him to gigs but this circle would form round him, pushing me to the edge. He'd always hold out his hand to pull me in, but as he got bigger, the circles got bigger and we couldn't physically hold on.

'James would be dragged one way and it was up to me to fight my way towards him. The busier he got, the more I threw myself into my music. He was very supportive - we still had this incredible bond.'

Of his most famous song, You're Beautiful, Camilla, claims that Blunt only dedicated the song to her. It was in fact inspired by his ex-girlfriend Dixie Chassay

'Everybody thinks You're Beautiful was written about me,' says Camilla. 'He dedicated it to me at a gig on my birthday. But it's always had mixed emotions for me because it ends, "I'll never be with you."

'Yet I thought that nothing could change us. We talked about marriage and children - there was never a question that our future wasn't together.'

While Camilla claims to have no regrets about their relationship and insists she has moved on, she believes that fame has changed the man she met and fell in love with.

'James did change,' she says. 'Fame didn't seem to make him happy. One of the things I loved about him was that he was always so laid back. That changed. He would get really on edge - always on the lookout for someone jumping out at him. I'd try to calm him down but that whole celebrity thing is hard to deal with.

'I can honestly say that the experience hasn't made me bitter. It's just made me sad that someone I loved and thought I really knew could let this happen. Doing this interview has helped me draw that line. Life goes on and my music goes on, too. James plays to thousands of people and I play tiny venues, but it makes me happy. Happy is all I want to be.'

Canada.com reports that James Blunt is the latest artist to get the Weird Al treatment.

Al will turn Blunt's hit, "You're Beautiful," into "You're Pitiful." However, don't go rushing out to buy the new album.

It's not because Yankovic doesn't have one forthcoming... because he does. But after finishing "You're Pitiful," Blunt's record label said Yankovic was not allowed to release it.

June 13, 2006 · "Weird Al" Yankovic, the king of pop parody, has a brand-new song out, available for free on his Web site. Music Producer and Song of the Day Editor Stephen Thompson gives us the scoop:
In a career spanning more than 25 years, pop-music parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic hasn't exactly ranked among the music business' fiercest iconoclasts: He doesn't release his song parodies without the consent of the artists being parodied, and he's rarely used the Internet as more than a tool to promote his projects and connect with his fans. But a music label's efforts to block a (relatively tame) parody of James Blunt's ubiquitous hit "You're Beautiful" has Yankovic fighting back publicly, and using his Web site as a tool to do so.
According to Yankovic, Blunt himself gave his blessing to a song called "You're Pitiful" (audio), which was to appear on Yankovic's now-finished but as-yet-unreleased new album. But after Yankovic finished recording the parody, Atlantic Records, Blunt's label, told Yankovic that he couldn't release "You're Pitiful." Though Yankovic has encountered resistance from artists before -- after a miscommunication involving permissions, Coolio publicly objected to a released parody of "Gangsta's Paradise," while Prince has always turned down Yankovic's requests to parody his hits -- he says this is the first time a label has stepped in to squash the release of one of his parodies. (Quoth an Atlantic representative: "We have no comment on this matter.")
So how, exactly, does a music label have a say in whether one of its artists can be parodied?
"The legality in this case is somewhat moot," Yankovic writes when contacted via e-mail. "James Blunt could still let me put it on my album if he really wanted to, but he obviously doesn't want to alienate his own record company... and my label could release the parody without Atlantic's blessing, but they don't really want to go to war with another label over this. So really, it's more of a political matter than a legal matter."
Of course, it's not hard to circulate a song these days, and Yankovic has helped that process along by making an MP3 of the track available for free download on his Web site. It may not appear on Yankovic's new album, but "You're Pitiful" will still swirl around in cyberspace long after Blunt's original recedes from memory.
"I have a long-standing history of respecting artists' wishes," Yankovic writes. "So if James Blunt himself were objecting, I wouldn't even offer my parody for free on my Web site. But since it's a bunch of suits -- who are actually going against their own artist's wishes -- I have absolutely no problem with it."

That seminal auteur of pop parody has struck again this time targeting the talent of these fair shores.

Weird Al Yankovic has been seriously lampooning some of the most popular recorded songs since the early 80's with tracks like Ricky (Toni Basil's Mickey), Eat It (Michael Jackson's Beat It) and Smells Like Nirvana (er, do I really need to?). Despite not really being in the public eye as much, since then, he has not let up on the music industry and continues to release albums here and there.

His latest masterwork is a send up of James Blunt's You're Beautiful which has been top of the pops throughout 2005 and 2006 across 25 countries which resulted in two 'Ivors' at the Ivor Novello Awards last month for International Hit of the Year and Most Performed Work.

Weird Al's version is entitled You're Pitiful in which he mimics the lilting vocals of Blunt to state:"You're pitiful, you're pitiful, you're pitiful, it's true.Never had a date that you couldn't inflate,And you smell repulsive, too.What a bummer being you."

Despite how that reads, it's actually quite funny and well produced.

Writer Paul Davidson is taking a break from bumping into random celebrities to write this little ditty to the TV industry, An Open Letter To Producers Who Continue To Use James Blunt Over and Over and Over Again."I know that you sat watching that sequence with your female lead contemplating her life and the problems she's faced and the tough road she's traversed to get to this point in the episode you're currently in post production on... And I know that when you watched that sequence you thought to yourself how beautiful that character looked and how if you could just find a song that could communicate just how beautiful she was in that moment that it would further hit home the point to the audience... But do you really need to use James Blunt's song "You're Beautiful" to do it? Are we really that stupid that we will hear that song, listen to the words, and think to ourselves how beautiful said character is even though she's faced such tough problems throughout her life?"

(CBS) Not since Elvis Presley was drafted has a soldier made as big an impact on the music scene as James Blunt, the former British army officer whose hit single, "You're Beautiful," has become a mega-hit in both Britain and the United States.

His debut album, "Back to Bedlam," has sold more than 2 million copies in the United States since its October release, and more than 9 million worldwide.

Its slow-burn ballad, "You're Beautiful," recently became the first single in nearly a decade by a British artist to reach the top of the U.S. charts.

Blunt has been called the world’s most sensitive rock star, and on The Early Show Tuesday, he told co-anchor Rene Syler that "You're Beautiful" is "just about a moment where I saw my ex-girlfriend. I was on the underground (subway) in London, and she was with her new man, who I didn't know existed. And in that second, she and I caught eyes and really lived a lifetime in that moment. But I didn't do anything about it."

What is it about that song that he thinks speaks to everyone?

"It was a very personal moment to me, but I think anyone has probably had that moment where they look at a stranger, somewhere in the world, and catch eyes, and wonder, if time and place had been different, what might have been," he said.

Blunt spent five years in the British military.

"I had a really amazing time," he told Syler. "I joined the army because they paid for my university tuition fees. It was a good job to have, I met some amazing people, and I went to some amazing places."

Among those he met: the Queen herself: “I worked with her as a mounted bodyguard (on horseback), and had some incredible things to do. And it was good stuff: As a songwriter, you need things to draw on.”

Blunt says he’s been in touch with the "ex" he wrote about in “You’re Beautiful,” and she’s remarked to him that he looks "particularly scruffy now (as compared to when he was in the army), but she said she understood. I'm now in a different uniform."

Where does he get his songwriting inspiration? From "life's experiences," Blunt said. "It could be anything. Good times and bad. It's what life is about, is ups and down. And you only appreciate the ups because of the downs. So, there's loves and losses and friendships."

He also writes of his time in the army.

"My best friend's in there; his name is Billy; he owes me lots of money and I wasn't gonna get the money back, so I thought I'd just write a really abusive song about him and sell it around the world and destroy his reputation," Blunt joked.

Essex FM claims it was besieged by complaints from angry listeners, who had evidently had enough of Mr Blunt’s omnipresent over-earnestness. It seems that people are finally paying heed to Blunt’s own suggestion, “To all those bastards who don’t like my music – you’re all adults, you can switch your radio off.”

Perhaps in an attempt to counter claims that the banning is no more than a typical radio station publicity stunt, Essex FM program controller Chris Cotton explained, “We don’t have anything against James Blunt and we’re pleased he has been so successful, but we really need a break. “While his songs have been very popular, there is a tremendous amount of industry pressure to play certain artists frequently. “Often this can be out of step with the audience’s tastes, which results in songs being overplayed. We’re happy to stand up to this pressure and follow the strong message listeners have given us. We encourage other radio stations to take the same step.”No one is more aware of Blunt’s massive over-exposure than the man himself. Accepting the Ivor Novello Award, Blunt said, “thank you very much for the Most Overplayed Song award.”

Meanwhile, fellow UK sop-rockers Keane look set to be the greatest beneficiaries of the Blunt ban.

A radio station has responded to James Blunt's suggestion that anyone who does not like his music should simply switch off the radio, by banning his tracks from the airwaves.

In a move that may be closely monitored by other stations, Essex FM announced that from today it would no longer play Blunt's hits "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover".

The GCap Media station said it was responding to recent audience research, which revealed that listeners had tired of Blunt's distinctive sound.

"Quite often there will be popular artists that people are starting to grow weary of. This time, the number of specific comments about James Blunt were more than we have ever seen for one particular artist," Chris Cotton, the programme controller, said.

"It was quite staggering. People said, 'Can you get rid of him?' 'Can you ban him?' Even people who say they are fans of his songs go on to express that they're sick of it."

Initially, the station will ban Blunt for a few days while eliciting feedback. But early indications suggest listeners are happy with the decision. When the station announced its intention to ban the singer, the switchboard was inundated.

"The amount of feedback is enormous, so it looks like there'll be a pretty long-term ban," Mr Cotton said. "This does tend to happen when artists reach a certain level of popularity, when it becomes wall-to-wall coverage.

"He has a unique sound and is an honest songwriter. That's the sort of combination that makes someone stand out, but people also tend to tire of that sound.We don't have anything against James Blunt and we're pleased he has been so successful, but we really need a break.

"While his songs have been very popular, there is a tremendous amount of industry pressure to play certain artists frequently. Often this can be out of step with the audience's tastes, which results in songs being overplayed. We're happy to stand up to this pressure. We encourage other radio stations to take the same step."

Blunt's music has been labelled too bland by many people, but last week he was given the music industry seal of approval when he won two Ivor Novello awards.

"You're Beautiful" was voted international hit of the year and most performed work at the ceremony, which recognises songwriting talent.

Accepting his award, Blunt said: "To all those bastards who don't like my music - you're all adults, you can switch your radio off."

Asked if he ever got sick of his music, the former Household Cavalry officer whose love life, including a fling with Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, has made headlines, said: "I don't have to listen to it. I'm the one who sings it. And it's continued to get me laid."

Blunt has not found it quite so easy to seduce the audience of Essex FM, who, according to the station's playlist, prefer the music of Corinne Bailey Rae, Robbie Williams and Keane.

"You're Beautiful" reached number one in 25 countries, and in March Blunt became the first British artist to top the US Billboard chart in nine years. His album Back to Bedlam has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.

Acknowledging that some people might be tiring of his songs, when he accepted the Novello award for Most Performed Work, Blunt said: "I should probably be rude about it before anyone else is. So thank you very much for the Most Overplayed Song award."

In 1999, BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 refused to play "Millennium Prayer" by Sir Cliff Richard. It went to number one despite a lack of airplay.

A radio station has responded to James Blunt's suggestion that anyone who does not like his music should simply switch off the radio, by banning his tracks from the airwaves.
